Baker, F., Roth, E. A., Neuroplasticity and Functional Recovery: Training Models and Compensatory Strategies in Music Therapy. Nordic Journal of Music Therapy, 13(1), 20-32.
Abstract:
This article outlines new research developments in music medicine with brain-trauma patients. The authors put forth the idea that specific music therapy interventions that address the restoration of function could be more appropriate than those geared towards developing compensatory mechanisms. They go on to outline different strategies aimed towards restoring neurological function, and discuss the potential outcomes of each approach. In addition to providing an overview of neuroplasticity, this article gives a framework for music therapists to build a lineage of systematic thought relevant to the use of music in neurorehabilitation, as well as discuss the concept of behavioral compensation. Finally, it provides information about different music therapy literature linked to these topics.
