Title: One-Session Music Therapy and CBT for Critically Ill Cancer Patients

Authors: Lucanne Magill; Tomer Levin; Lesley Spodek

Journal: Psychiatric Services Vol. 50 No. 10 (1998) page 1216

      Article Summary:

The article discussed a study done with 39 critically ill cancer patients in a structured, single session model. The experience included two songs chosen by the client and sung by a music therapist who accompanied him/herself on the guitar. After each piece, the lyrics were discussed, by reframing cognitive distortions with positive reinforcement. The session ended with a rendition of He’s Got the Whole World in His Hands sung by the therapist with the name of the participant, their family members and friends who may have been present. Pre and post-test scores were obtained using the Distress Thermometer.
